Come and learn who Capel

Sound Foreshores are…

Capel Sound Foreshores is located on the Mornington Peninsula only an hour and a half from Melbourne. Spanning four kilometers, nestled between the suburbs of Rosebud and Rye, Capel Sound Foreshores is a hidden gem for time away from home.

Capel Sound Foreshores is independent to the Mornington Peninsula Shire and Parks Victoria as we are run as a not-for profit. The majority of our revenue is produced through foreshore camping in which is then generated back into the reserve for upgrades to infrastructure, environmental works and education programs.

Our Vision

A commitment to innovative and responsive management that protects and enhances our coast and provides a natural sanctuary to connect our diverse communities to the land, the sea and to the traditional owners of our shared country.

Our Values

Nature is the soul of Capel Sound Foreshores.

Community is the spirit of Capel Sound Foreshores.

Stewardship is the heart of Capel Sound Foreshores.

Management

Capel Sound Foreshores is on crown land held by the Victorian Government. Management of this land is specified in Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978 which:

  1. Specifies how all Victoria Crown land will be managed; and

  2. Allows the responsible Minister to appoint a Committee of Management to manage the foreshores on behalf of the state.

The Capel Sound Foreshores Committee of Management is made up of voluntary community members that bring years of expertise who have been appointed by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA). Members are charged with the responsibility and authority to manage, improve, maintain, and control the foreshores. This is achieved through good governance, sound financial management and a robust risk framework that enables the foreshores to operate independently, while building the environmental values of the area and achieving its vision.

The Foreshore Manager of the reserve supervises staff and oversees day to day operations including specialist contractors. Capel Sound Foreshores operations have been divided into eight distinct delivery ‘Strategy Areas’. Utilised since the Coastal Management Plan 2016 (CMP) they enable efficient program design, setting of objectives, monitoring of delivery actions and clear reporting. Staff are tasked to strategy area objectives and actions, supported by expertise in the CoM. Other government and non-government organisations can be collaborators or provide information to manage with.

Our Location

Capel Sound Foreshores reserve begins from Chinaman’s Creek and continues to Rye consisting of campgrounds in Capel Sound and Tootgarook consisting of Trueman’s Road Carpark, Tootgarook Boat ramp, public BBQ facilities as well as several picnic tables, public toilets and outdoor showers.
